Background of the Study
Traditional proverbs are an integral part of indigenous communication in Ohaozara, encapsulating communal wisdom, moral lessons, and cultural values in concise expressions. These sayings, passed orally from generation to generation, serve as tools for education, conflict resolution, and social regulation. They offer insights into historical experiences and cultural beliefs that reinforce community identity. However, the rise of modern communication methods and globalization has led to a decline in the usage of traditional proverbs. Recent studies highlight that while proverbs remain a powerful medium of expression, their role is diminishing in everyday discourse (Ekwueme, 2023; Nkem, 2024). This study appraises the influence of traditional proverbs on indigenous communication, examining their impact on interpersonal relationships and cultural transmission (Chukwudi, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Traditional proverbs, once central to indigenous communication, are increasingly being sidelined by modern communication methods in Ohaozara. This decline may lead to the erosion of cultural wisdom and a weakening of community bonds that rely on traditional conflict resolution and moral guidance. Limited research has been conducted on the extent to which these proverbs continue to shape indigenous communication practices. This study seeks to address this gap by examining the influence of traditional proverbs on communication and exploring strategies to preserve their use in contemporary society.
